Congratulations to our December Athlete of the Month, Katelyn Zernovoj!
Katelyn has been crushing it this year. She has improved and progressed in so many areas; from strength, to gymnastics, to aerobic movements. She also PR’d by becoming a mother for the first time!
In Coach Ikaika’s words: “Katelyn constantly pushes herself through every WOD that is thrown to her. Whether her weakness or strength, she takes the bull by the horn! You’ll find her either in the 6am, 5:30pm class or the nearest Coffee & Donut shop. She’s an awesome person to be around in and out of the gym.” Katelyn is a huge part of H2 and we couldnt be happier to have her as our Athlete of the Month!

When did you start CrossFit?
3 years ago, my first year was kind of on and off… then I’ve been doing it for 2, good, solid years.
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).
Born and raised in Northern California, came to DC to attend to Gallaudet Univ and stayed ever since! Live in DC with the husband, cat & dog for almost 10 years now, recently had our first baby in March. I keep myself busy by making sure the baby is being fed and has clean diaper on, running my small, self-owned, business and try to attend to class most days during the week because I eat too many cookies than I can count (guilty) :)
What were you doing before CrossFit?
Played volleyball! I’m on the volleyball team for Deaflympics. I’ve played in World Championship in Bueno Aires, Argentina in 2008, 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei, Taiwan, traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria twice for 2012 World Championship and 2013 Deaflympics. I’m currently still, surprisingly, on the team for 2017 Samsun, Turkey next summer.
How did you find CrossFit?
Through the husband, of course. He tried to convince me to join him a couple years ago but I was busy being a student, traveling for volleyball and didn’t have money back then :p
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?
“I’m in deep sh*t” when I thought I was in shape during my pre-CF era….. CF was totally different
What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
Just simply staying in shape for VB after I graduated from GU
Have you achieved any of those goals?
I think so because I’m still on the volleyball team and I’m currently the 2nd oldest on the team out of all 14 young players (Gasp) it’s seriously time for me to retire….. I’m so old….
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
Well… I’d say this… I have literally worked out almost everyday while I was pregnant. Then when I gave birth to my daughter, all the doctors and nurses who helped delivered my baby said I was the fastest delivery they have ever seen. My birth, I swear, they said was not even 5 minutes but under. By working out daily, with modification of course, certainly helped give me the strength and stamina to push a little human out.
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Hierarchy?
Just have fun, you will learn the movement as you go!
Favorite WOD (Girl, Hero, or just a type of workout)?
anything that includes the barbell work (double thumbs up)
Least Favorite WOD?
anything gymnasticy – boo! (double thumbs down)
D.E.A.D.L.I.F.T!!!! All day, Everyday baby.
Least favorite lift?
i’d say thrusters…. those sucks big time
Something you might not know about me is…
I have a small pinkie that comes with my big volleyball hands… seriously, I bet it’s smaller than yours. feel free to stop and ask me to compare :) I also don’t have a pinkie knuckle as well, heheh. true story. I was born with it….. don’t know why….
