Congratulations to our September Athlete of the Month, Nikita Shenoy!

Nikita Shenoy

"A low trajectory to a distant horizon"

The founder of CrossFit once used this phrase to describe the ideal approach to using CrossFit to get healthy and fit. Its the idea that its not about maxing out every day, its not "One weird trick to lose weight FAST!!" Its a slow, steady, inexorable process of consistent form and effort over days, weeks, months, and years that will lead to a happier, healthier, fitter, and longer life. We try to preach this ideal as much as we can at CrossFit Hierarchy, but sometimes a real world example does a better job of explaining it than we ever could, and there is perhaps no better example of that than this month's Athlere of the Month, Nikita Shenoy.

Nikita has been a member of CrossFit Hierarchy almost literally Day 1 and has been the epitome of consistency ever since. From her first class on April 3rd, 2014, Nikita has attended more than 800 (!) classes. She comes rain or shine, good day or bad, and the results speak for themselves. Shes gotten stronger, fitter, hit numerous PRs, crushes out pullups, and anyone who knows her knows her hollow rocks have come a long, long way.

Shes also a genuine joy to have to class, as anyone who has taken 5 or 6pm with her can attest to. Supportive of others, welcoming to new comers, and eternally patient with Tylers antics (See final question below for proof of that). Shes made CrossFit a part of her life in a healthy and sustainable way, while still acheiving huge milestones and goals. We as coaches are so proud of her and proud to have her as our Athlete of the Month.

Congrats to Nikita and read on below for our interview with her!

When did you start CrossFit?

I took my first Intro to Crossfit class in 2013 at Crossfit Praxis. Scared, sore, and humbled I went home and thought long and hard about joining for real. 3 MONTHS later I took the plunge and actually signed up for my first foundations class.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.).

I'm originally from NJ (don't @ me).

I went to UMD - go Terps!

I currently work as a Sales Director at a tech start up in Dupont.

I'm a combination Slytherin/Hufflepuff

What were you doing before CrossFit?

What was life before Crossfit? I don't remember... I had random bouts of motivation where I would pop in a P90x dvd in my parent's basement and pretend I was fit.

How did you find CrossFit?

After UMD, I lived about 3 blocks from Crossfit Praxis and decided to walk in one day and give it a try. I would always see those Reebok & Nike commercials where really fit people are pushing sleds and using battle ropes and I wanted to be like them. I'm still trying.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?

"Do I have rhabdo?"

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?

My goals have really evolved throughout my time doing Crossfit. When I first started my goal was just to finish a workout. I was just trying to survive.

As I started to get into better shape, I could start focusing on hitting more specific PRs. Joining Hierarchy in 2014 was so important to setting those goals and achieving them. It felt like a lot of us at that time were all in a similar place trying to achieve the same goals and would keep each other accountable.

Have you achieved any of those goals?

Of the goals I have achieved, I am just trying to get better and more efficient. Of the goals I haven't achieved... I'm still workin!

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?

Crossfit has had a huge impact on my life outside the gym. My social life, my work life, my liver... they have all been affected.

What does Crossfit Hierarchy mean to you?

Joining Crossfit Hierarchy is one of the best decisions I ever made in life. This sounds dramatic, and it is, but I don't think my life today would be the same without it. I have met some of my best friends at this gym and I have grown so much as a person and as an athlete here. It all has to do with the community that the coaches and the members have created.

Crossfit Hiearchy has brought so much positivity in my life. I could use this section to write down every single person at the gym who has had an impact on me but that list would be entirely too long.

Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?

All the PRs; all the firsts

Summer of 2014 - aka "The One Where We All Became Friends and Drank Too Much"

Xfit Weddings - my friends marrying.. each other!

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Hierarchy?

1) Be patient. Focus on the process, not the results.

2) Always listen to your coaches and ask them for help!

3) Don't let your ego get the best of you. Always look to other people for inspiration but don't compare anyone else's journey (or time) with your own.

Favorite WOD (Girl, Hero, or just a type of workout)?

I love workouts with pull ups. So like pull ups.. for time?

Least Favorite WOD?

Anything with hollow rocks in it...

Favorite Lift?

Least favorite lift?

Snatches & Overhead Squats

Something you might not know about me is…

The story behind how I got the nickname Q (queue) - Tyler told someone my name had a silent 'Q' in it and then proceeded to call me Q for the next 5 years. It caught on. The end.
