Congratulations to our January Athlete of the Month, Shai Romirowsky!

Shai Romirowsky

A familiar face to any of our morning crew, Shai is the ultimate example of “Started from the bottom now we here.” When Shai joined Hierarchy he struggled greatly with mobility. In the 6 months since then he has attacked his weaknesses with indefatigable passion and determination and it has paid dividends. His movements are night and day compared to where he started. As Coaches we love having Shai in class as he always brings a good attidtude and is emminitnely coachable.

Read on below for some Q&A, and congratulations again to Shai on being Athlete of the Month!

When did you start CrossFit?
Summer 2016 (About 7 months)

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).
Originally from NJ and came down to University of Maryland for school. I’ve been a DC resident for the past 9 years, and moved from Logan Circle to Adams Morgan last Fall. I work in commercial real estate and when I’m not chasing around my 2-year old son, I enjoy rooting for Philadelphia sports teams, playing basketball, and getting together with a good group of friends.

What were you doing before CrossFit?
Convincing myself that I was getting enough exercise through pickup basketball and being a dad…

How did you find CrossFit?
A few close friends had become active CrossFitters and encouraged me to give it a try. When we moved around the corner from H1, I took the plunge. The combination of proximity, accountability, team-environment, and the physical challenge has kept me coming!

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?
Thought 1: I am terribly out of shape.
Thought 2: I am very impressed I didn’t throw up.
Thought 3: I cannot believe I am going to do this several times a week.

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
Commit to a regimen that would improve my overall fitness, strength, and athleticism.

Have you achieved any of those goals?
Yes! But still a lot to improve on.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
My energy level is up and my mobility has improved, which impacts everyday life in a lot of positive ways.

Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?
It’s a nice feeling to look at the upcoming WOD and be excited rather than intimidated (sometimes). Big milestone.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Hierarchy?
First: It takes time, cut yourself some slack.
Second: Don’t worry about the weight; focus on getting comfortable in the movements.
Third: Use the coaches as a resource!

Favorite WOD (Girl, Hero, or just a type of workout)?
Partner WODs are a good time.

Least Favorite WOD?
When the words “800 Meter Run” or a “1,000 Meter Row” are featured prominently

Favorite Lift?

Least favorite lift?
Overhead squats are my nemesis

Something you might not know about me is…
I have two different color eyes
