February 2018 - Celia Choy


It is our pleasure to announce that Celia Choy has been named Athlete of the Month for February 2018!

When discussing who should be Athlete of the Month, it took only moments for almost every coach to mention Celia. A longtime morning-classer at Hierarchy 1, Celia is one of the hardest workers in the entire Hierarchy community. Since joining way back in October 2016, she has been a constant presence in the morning classes and open gyms with a smile on her face and a will to get down to business.

As if Celia's consiscentcy, progress in fitness, and attitude werent enough to make her Athlete of the Month (and they are), Celia has been even more impressive in light of some big changes in her life across the past year. As many of you know Celia and her husband are expecting their first child any day now and where others might rest and take a step back during pregnancy, her dedication to keeping active, fit, and healthy during that time has been amazing. Celia's attendence never dropped off and even as she started to run in to some obstacles with her bar path, she was always willing to scale and adapt to make sure she kept at it.Her can-do attitude through-out her pregnancy has made her a role model to other athletes and coaches at the gym and we are so very proud of her. 

Celia is already talking about looking forward to getting back to the gym post delivery, and we cannot wait to have her back. Please read on below for our interview with Celia and join me in congratulating her as Athlete of the Month!

When did you start CrossFit?

About three and a half years ago.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.)

I'm an attorney at a firm here in DC, focusing on litigation and investigations.  I live in Mt. Pleasant with my husband and we can't wait to welcome our first child any day now. 

What were you doing before CrossFit?

Running and yoga. 

How did you find CrossFit?

There was a box in my old neighborhood in Brooklyn.  It looked like fun, so I tried out their free intro class and got hooked.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?

That I wanted to be like the badass women doing muscle ups!

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?

Get stronger, feel good, have fun.

Have you achieved any of those goals?

All three!  Still working on those muscle ups though.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?

Absolutely.  Before I started doing CrossFit, I didn't have a fitness routine that I enjoyed enough to stick with over the long term.  Now I wake up looking forward to my morning workout and knowing that I'll feel great all day.  And more recently, doing CrossFit during my pregnancy has helped me feel healthy and energetic even though my body is going through big changes. 

What does Crossfit Hierarchy mean to you?

CrossFit Hierarchy is such a friendly and supportive community.  Coming here inspires me to work hard and keep a positive attitude.

Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?

I was really proud of getting my first strict pull-up.  I never thought I would have enough upper body strength to do that.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Hierarchy?

Be patient and keep showing up.  It takes time to build up your skills and strength, but if you show up consistently, you will make progress.  Also, make use of our fantastic coaches.  They have a ton of knowledge and are always willing to help you improve.

Favorite WOD (Girl, Hero, or just a type of workout)?

I like workouts with lots of cardio - running, rowing, and box jumps are my favorites.

Least Favorite WOD?

That time we did 100 burpees over the bar.

Favorite Lift?

Clean and jerk.

Least favorite lift?

Overhead squats.  So awkward.
