Congratulations to our November Athlete of the Month, November 2017 - Kelly McGuiness!
November 2017 - Kelly McGuiness
It is our absolute pleasure to announce that Kelly McGuiness has been named Athlete of the Month for November 2017!
Kelly started her CrossFit journey this early this year at CrossFit Hierarchy Ivy City. Since joining, Kelly she has made incredible progress with numerous PR's over the year, including most recently for her Push Jerk and Snatch. With her dedication, determination, and almost religious attendance to the 6am class, this is well deserved! We’re excited to see what other feats she will conquer. Congrats, Kelly, for being CrossFit Hierarchy's November 2017 Athlete of the Month!
See below for Kelly's responses to the Questionarre, and congratulate her when you see her!
When did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in March, right here at CrossFit Hierarchy.
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.)
I am 25 years old, and I've been in DC since 2015. I came here to work as AmeriCorps for Common Good City Farm (an Urban Farm in LeDroit Park, near Howard University), and currently work for an organic vegetable gardening company called Love & Carrots.
What were you doing before CrossFit?
Before CrossFit, I was running a lot - at least 25mi per week. I also had been lifting weights (following plans incorporating the major lifts) since college, but never Olympic style lifting. I felt my endurance was good, but I was frustrated with my lack of strength gains. I knew I needed assistance from coaches!
How did you find CrossFit?
Groupon! I always figured CrossFit would be too expensive for me, but the Groupon was a great deal. And then I got hooked!
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?
"Oh dang! That was hard! Annnnnnnnnnd I can't wait to do it again. Uh oh, I'm doomed!"
What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
Improve my strength, cut down my body fat, and learn proper lifting technique. I wanted to find another way to exercise that wasn't just running, as I don't think it was doing good things for my body -- and I was bored!
Have you achieved any of those goals?
Yes! I feel so much stronger, and I keep hitting new PRs. I also feel like I look stronger. And everyone at CrossFit Hierarchy is so welcoming, it makes coming every day at 6am pretty easy!
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
I'm working on getting my friends interested in it as well! My friends have also commented that I look stronger!
What does Crossfit Hierarchy mean to you?
CrossFit Hierarchy means I'm definitely going to get a good workout in, and leave both completely exhausted & empowered.
Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?
Attending "Barbells 4 Boobs" with my mom. Not only is she a breast cancer/double mastectomy, but she's never even done CrossFit before. But she competed in the event, and CRUSHED it!! I was so proud.
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Hierarchy?
You're stronger than you think, so push hard and keep with it! You will see improvements with time.
Favorite WOD (Girl, Hero, or just a type of workout)?
I love the ones that incorporate short sets of HEAVY lifts, and some cardio sprinkled in.
Least Favorite WOD?
Really long sets of the same stuff. I get 'bored' and it seems even more challenging! But truthfully, I pretty much like them all!
Cleans! Although I need to get better at not bruising my clavicle....
Least favorite lift?
Snatches! I always forget some component. But I will conquer them some day...
Something you might not know about me is…
I used to be a competitive equestrian (hunter/jumper). I competed in the largest events on the East Coast, and came in second place at my Regional Finals (New York, Connecticut, New Jersey).
