Congratulations to our August Athlete of the Month, Jordan Chasnoff!
Having taken some time off from CrossFit due to a move and the arrival of his beautiful daughter, Jordan joined our community in January 2016 and has impressed us from day one From his first strict pull up, to multiple PRs across the board, Jordan continues to progress in his fitness seemingly every day. You can find him with the 6am Crew at our Ivy City location crushing workouts. Congrats again, Jordan, on being our Athlete of the Month!
When did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit at another gym a few years ago but fell out of it after things got hectic with work, family, and a move. This second go around started when I joined at Ivy City in January 2016.
Favorite WOD (Girl, Hero, or just a type of workout)?
Chippers! Repeating movements in circuit workouts makes me loose my mind. Half the WODs I can’t count to 10 and turn into a spaz. So I’d rather just do tons of reps of one movement then move to the next.
Least Favorite WOD?
This would have been long list earlier in the year. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about my progress is that I find myself looking forward to each morning’s workout when it’s posted the night before (except thrusters).
Least favorite lift?
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).
I met my wife when we were at summer camp as kids. She moved to DC after grad school. I convinced her to dump her boyfriend, and it was on. We live near Langdon Park with our 1.5 year old daughter, 8 year old bulldog, and annoying cat.
What were you doing before CrossFit?
I was always a good athlete but never prioritized my fitness until getting into CrossFit.
How did you find CrossFit?
I was bragging to a friend about doing P90X and he mentioned CrossFit. Hearing myself say “Dude, NOTHING IS MORE INTENSE THAN P90X BY BEACHBODY!” was a low point. So, in an act of humility, I tried CrossFit the next day.
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?
After my first CrossFit workout, I was exhausted but had a blast. The next morning, it took 15 minutes to get down a flight of stairs.
What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
To be healthier and happier and to loose some LBs. My CrossFit-nerd goal is to clean and jerk my body weight.
Have you achieved any of those goals?
I’ve been thrilled with my results and proud of the work that I’ve put in. I haven’t reached my C&J goal yet, but am definitely chipping away at both sides of that one. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and will be psyched when I finally get it.
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
Yes, in more ways than I hoped for. My energy level is up, I feel good, I’m happy, I look for ways to exercise outside of the gym, I’m a better dad and husband.
Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?
I’ve hit a couple big lifts that I’m proud of. But nothing feels better than having my morning workout buddies cheer me on when I’ve PR’d a lift, got my first strict pull-up, or finished a sweaty one.
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Hierarchy?
Everything is going to hurt for a while. After a while everything is going to hurt a little less.
Something you might not know about me is…
My favorite way to exercise outside of the gym is on my stand up paddle board. I’m cool with the Potomac but I’m still freaked out by the Anacostia (hopefully, one day).
