ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to our September Athlete of the Month, Leslie Leman!

Leslie Leman

Leslie moved to DC in late 2015 and instantly became a regular at the 6am class. Not only has she consistently been an inspiring athlete who adds positivity and energy to every class she attends, Leslie has recently left her fellow athletes and coaches in awe; she’s almost 7 months pregnant and still crushing WODs! Fellow 6am-er Alex Kaplan jokes, “How many months pregnant does Leslie have to be before I can beat her in a workout?” (bad news, Alex, we may never see this day).

In addition to her tremendous performance and dedication, she never passes an opportunity to encourage and welcome new CrossFit athletes. We love having Leslie as part of our Hierarchy family. Congrats again Leslie on being Athlete of the Month!

When did you start CrossFit?
Fall of 2012…I had been running and doing a bunch of at home workout DVD’s. Some friends were signing up for our elements course on island so we decided to all try it together…been hooked ever since.

Favorite WOD (Girl, Hero, or just a type of workout)?
Probably Randy or Grace..any mid weight Olympic lifting I love

Least Favorite WOD?
Well if we are talking right now it would be anything that has to do with running. Running pregnant is the worst…Non pregnant I actually enjoying running WODs…so then it would probably have to be alternating lunges…don’t know why those are just so hard for me. And anything with wall balls…

Favorite Lift?
Power Clean

Least favorite lift?
Full Snatch – for some reason I just have such a hard time dropping under that bar…That is my goal post baby…get comfortable dropping in a full snatch and then finally get a good PR on that lift. going to start coming to Owen’s barbell class…:)

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).
I have a wonderful husband Miguel who many of you have met. We have been married for over 4 years. Have a crazy rambunctious 2 year old son Logan and another little boy on the way,. I have been working for the Marriott Vacation Club for almost 12 years now. Spent the last 9 in St. Thomas before moving here last December. While we had a great time in the islands after having a baby it was time to get back stateside and be closer to family. I am originally from Pittsburgh so DC is a good distance. Close enough to the parents where we can see them on the weekend but not too close that they are stopping by unannounced all the time…

What were you doing before CrossFit?
Mainly a lot of running. Running in St. Thomas was a great workout, it was pretty much hills the whole time. I also played volleyball in college and got into running as a way to stay in shape after. I needed some variety and started doing the P90X and insanity workouts at home. I think my husband misses the entertainment of watching me jump around like an idiot in the living room..

How did you find CrossFit?
Well as you can imagine St. Thomas is a small island…its about 12 by 4 miles and 60,000 people…so when we finally got a crossfit box everyone was talking about it and lot of my friends were trying it. My sister was living on St. Thomas at the time and we decided to give it a go together..both of us have been hooked every since…

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
I have made a ton of great friends through Crossfit. Especially moving here and not knowing anyone it has been so great to be a part of such a wonderful community. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and it has really helped both myself and my husband make a lot of new friends in a new city.

Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?
I would have to say my special memory or achievement would be competing the open. The open is always so much fun and a great time to really push yourself. I was able to get 9th overall female in DC and 3rd in the gym behind the all stars Antonio and Ikaika, so I was pretty pumped about that.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Hierarchy?
Just do it! So many people tell me that they have to “get in shape” before they join crossfit. We all started somewhere and there are all sorts of levels on fitness in every class and everything can be modified to whatever level you are at. So don’t wait, just try it and you will be hooked! And log you scores! Even if just for yourself…it will be so rewarding to see all of the progress that you make!

Something you might not know about me is…
In my four years of crossfit I have actually only participated in 2 competitions outside of the open…and was pregnant for both of them! Now that I am stateside I need to try and at least do one competition when I am not pregnant…

Will Alex ever beat you in a WOD?
Hmmmm…that is a great question..i want to say maybe he did once around 6 months pregnant…but we are getting close to the 9 month mark so we will see….he can still crush me in round one though :)
